Camping in Campo

Camping in Campo - Picture Canyon, CO

For our second night in the camper, we drove 35 miles across the border to Picture Canyon, an archelogical site  covering many different cultures over the past 12,000 Years. This campground was completly off grid, no phone or wifi signal, no water or sewer hookups, no electric. We were totally contained.

The site is home to petroglyphs, archeological sites and some beautiful rock structures.

We arrived around 2:00 p.m. so we had plenty of time to do a little exploring.  Without a trail map or gps guide, we took off just following a very well traveled trail and went to see what we could see.

Unfortunatly, not every visitor has been so kind to follow rules and not deface the rocks, but scientists believe that markings found on this site date back and can be attributed to a couple of different types of Native cultures, including most recently the Apaches. The drawings and markings are interpreted to be markiing not only the passing of time but marking equinoxes as well.  We walked on from there in attempt of finding the Arch along the Arch trail, but took a wrong turn somewhere, because when we backtracked back to the camper, we had gone 4 miles and it was supposed to be a 4.2 mile loop.    We were hot, sweaty and ready to rest, so Ray put out the camp chairs and we soaked up some late afternoon sun and enjoyed a few cold beers.   I sat up my tripods and set to work to capture the night sky with some long exposure photography after dinner.
